The Brand New Heavies |
|
Synopsis: The Brand New Heavies were formed in 1985 by old friends Jan Kincaid (drums/keyboards), Andrew Levy (bass), and Simon Bartholomew (guitar), as an instrumental band in the London suburb of Ealing. Rehearsing in standard garage band fashion, the group, (then named Brothers International), were able to properly harness their budding funk abilities and in 1987, re-named themselves The Brand New Heavies, supplementing their instrumental-only trio with horns and vocalist N'Dea Davenport, creating a passionate blend of musicians dedicated to fusing soul and funk seamlessly. The song "Never Stop" exploded onto the American radio scene, while in the UK, songs like "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way" assaulted the airwaves, altering the band's status from a club sensation into a worldwide phenomenon. By 1992 the sound of The Brand New Heavies was mainstream and addictive. Their next album, the self-produced "Brother Sister," delivered a plethora of hits including "Dream on Dreamer," and "Spend Some Time" and went double platinum in the UK and practically gold in the US. This was their last album with the vocals of N'Dea Davenport. The BNH were shortly blessed with the vocal talent of Siedah Garrett destined to thicken the groove soup batter. The alliance with Garrett brought a contemporary awareness to a groove oriented band. "No marriage is easy," she says. "They just trusted that I knew how to craft a song and I trusted that the grooves would be there. It worked." The funkadellic groove of The Brand New Heavies is ceaselessly exhilarating and rhythmically soothing. Let yourself go, this is one band that will not disappoint.

The addition of Siedah Garrett only enriches the sound of this group. The music on this album is wonderful, very rich and funky! I prefer this new sound over anything they have done in the past!
