Without music, life is a journey through a desert. - Pat Conroy |
Diana Krall |
|
Synopsis: Diana Krall was born in Nanaimo, BC, Canada. Her early formal piano training was in classical but her interests soon gravitated towards jazz. She was heavily influenced by Fats Waller. "I think Dad has every recording Fats Waller ever made," she said, "and I tried to learn them all." Krall succeeded in winning the Vancouver Jazz Festival scholarship to Berklee College of Music but eventually returned to her native soil to play professionally. Although she was an accomplished pianist, it was her voice that brought her popularity. Her singing fashion is tranquil and warm, and has a lush quality that is both attractive and mesmerizing. She is a strong and honest performer and her sultry voice does not fall short.

1993 Stepping Out Just click here ! to send us your Review of this album. ... In her mid-20s here, Krall sings with honesty, subtlety, and persuasion while playing the piano with head-shaking authority, both as accompanist--she offers amazing asides in between vocal phrases--and as an absolutely A-one improviser.

Diana Krall pays homage to Nat King Cole on this generally upbeat swing album. There are variations that are interesting and her piano prowess is evident in several arrangements (especially "Hit That Jive Jack"). It is, on the whole, a classy and stylish undertaking ... I would recommend it as your first Krall purchase.

... the tension between smooth and rough, like the teetering blue note, keeps us hanging on each phrase as it develops ...

The blend of smouldering, sensual ballads and outright in your face swing is spellbinding. But what continues to blow me away is the level of musicianship that allows the toughest trio set-up (piano, guitar and bass) to carry so much rhythm. Two years later - this remains my favourite album of all time.

1994 Only Trust Your Heart ... Again, her talents are simply remarkable: she sings with feeling, emotion, and nuance--she invests a lyric with believability--and plays marvelous piano, no matter the tempo.

Makes anytime spent with someone -- special. Truly a great artist who will soon be labeled as the benchmark for all female jazz vocalists.

Among great voices, Diana Krall! Listening to "Only trust your heart" is like going back in time, when the greatest divas of female vocal jazz started.

This album draws attention to the softer side of jazz where Krall seems to find her strongest audience. My favorite piece is "I Don't Know Enough About You". A respectable effort by any standard but not vital to your CD collection

Her sultry jazz vocals are truly mesmerizing ... her voice conveys far more sex appeal than Mae West ever did with the same line. Diana is so easy to listen to -- but watch out --she's definitely addictive.

... She sends chills down my spine, you want to curl up in front of a fireplace listening to her. Very soothing to the nerves.

Diana Krall's smooth jazz styling is evident in this album and her voice, much improved, exudes a musically arousing quality. This album will have mass appeal and is emblematic of her soothing jazz style.

Diana Krall's best work to date. Pure sensuality. Raw moods. A work of art.

Outstanding. Easily the best jazz album of the decade. I thought that jazz was dead until I heard Diana Krall. I mean Kenny G is not jazz. I bought her "Love Scenes" album when it came out after hearing it and I thought, WOW! This is jazz!
