Synopsis:

Miles Davis was born on May 25, 1926 in Alton, Illinois and died Sept. 28, 1991. He was a legendary jazz trumpet player who broke new ground in numerous musical styles and techniques in cool jazz and fusion. His fame and talent as a trumpet player spawned many careers, as well as, musical revolutions, ultimately, crucial in the advancement of jazz. Miles Davis was considered to be an accomplished painter, in fact, his paintings in New York City, Spain, West Germany and Japan received critical acclaim. His artistic style was reflected in his eclectic fashion by the clothes he chose to wear on stage. His career spanned almost 50 years and his inspirational musical upheavals and unusual timing with melodic phrasing made him a magnificent jazz soloist. Miles Davis had a gift for the arts and was one of the rare jazz players of our time whose music became a part of his soul, indelibly stamped on our history. You must have an open mind to properly explore the vision of Miles Davis, let it slowly soak in, gently envelop you, and softly mesmerize your spirit.

Trumpeter Miles Davis (along with tenor-saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones) are heard on this CD reissue ... Both the quintet and the music qualify as classic ...

Miles Davis creates a lush full sound on this great album. My only peeve is that it seems a little too ordered and systematic, the improvisation is weak and the arrangements are a little too bold and dominate the solos regularly

** 1958 Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud

This album is basically a movie score of entirely improvised music. It's surreal and moving and unquestionably not your typical jazz effort.
- Christian Sarraf, Musicfolio 09/99

Fabulous, sensual music ...
- bob@koswerks.com, 09/99

... playing is rather uninspired, relying on hackney little blues phrases over and over on just about on every track. The only thing that stands out is the bleak vibe and the spontaneity of the session.
- a music fan, USA, 07/99

The spirit of "Film Noir" I picked up this CD just because it looked interesting. I was blown away with Davis's saavy improvisations ... A must have for the true jazz fan.
- tonynett@aol.com, California, 07/99

**** 1960 Kind Of Blue

If you were to buy only one Miles Davis album, I would suggest it would be this one, it is an absolute gem and one of the most famous jazz records ever made. The 9 minute So What version is a classic make-out tune entangled with lush vibes of an era past. Although uncommon for musicians to improvise on new material while recording, the effect is full and satisfying.
- Christian Sarraf, Musicfolio 09/99

Miles conceived these settings only hours before the recording dates and arrived with sketches which indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. The group had never played these pieces prior to the recordings and I think, without exception, the first complete performance of each was a take.
- Bill Evans

This is the one jazz record owned by people who don't listen to jazz, and with good reason ...
- John Szwed, amazon.com

... this is a tour de force ...Miles was ahead of the curve as always. no wonder why he turned his back on his past material it wasn't that it wasn't good it was you can't just capture that element again it was like yesterday and this is today ...
- mistermaxxx@yahoo.com, USA, 09/99

This is the best jazz record ever made! Period. Miles Davis' genius as an innovator shines in this date with destiny ... The clarity of the playing, the juxtaposition of silence against a cadence of rhythm that is transcendent certainly works magic on even the uninitiated jazz listener.

Maybe not essential Davis, but very pleasurable nonetheless.

Brilliant ! Miles Davis takes a hokey disney song and makes it something beautiful.
- hampton1970@yahoo.com, 09/99

New album cover is repulsive; the music is the greatest ... This is simply an album filled with big, fat, gorgeous melodies.

This album is an excellent effort although a little blander than some of Miles' previous work but nonetheless outstanding. Every song has a short commentary from Miles, muddled and obscure … of course.
- Christian Sarraf, Musicfolio 09/99

This is Miles with his second quartet, sounding as tight as ever. The work done by Herbie Hancock is also worth the price of this CD alone. Miles Smiles is a must have.

The fourth of the six studio albums by the Miles Davis Quintet of the 1960s was their last all-acoustic session ... but the music is consistently stimulating and unpredictable. It's funny that this group's playing had little influence on the music of 1967 for by 1987 it was becoming the mainstream of jazz.
- Scott Yanow, All-Music Guide

1968 Filles De Kilimanjaro

... No amount of track-by-track description here can begin to convey the beauty and intensity.
- Rolling Stone 4/69

But it is defintely on the edge of chaos where Miles' is tempted to but doesn't go off into complete abstraction which I suspect is what makes it so interesting ...
- a music fan, New York, 05/99

Beautiful like moon-glow. Focused intensity.
- a music fan, lafayette, 04/99

1968 In A Silent Way

... In a Silent Way remains a clearly electric jazz record, part ambient color exploration, part rock-inflected energy and vibe, and part outright maverick creativity. Davis takes many long, breathy solos, and they glisten in a burnished blue against his new group's strange admixture of musical moods.
- Andrew Bartlett, amazon.com

Miles the pioneer, Miles the bon vivant ... 'that's right' says miles. this is undoubtedly the best record i've ever heard.
- a music fan, England, 09/99

Pivotal Miles. Another turn in the career of Miles Davis. A hauntingly beautiful CD to listen to late at night.
- a music fan, California, 07/99

... This is an album of haunting and ethereal beauty - rich, layered, intricate aural landscapes that cast a deep spell no matter how many times you listen.
- a music fan, Nevada, 07/99

A Birth ... Miles, above this primordial sea of rhythms, begins to scream, one can fully appreciate the raw funky power.
- kaplanplace@erols.com, 05/99

*** 1969 Bitches Brew

This is an elegant jazz-fusion masterpiece and the only negative mention would be that some of the solos are long and drawn out. If you would like to be initiated to Miles, I still recommend "Kind of Blue".
- Christian Sarraf, Musicfolio 09/99

... Over three days anger, confusion, and exhilaration had reigned in the studio, and the sonic themes, scraps, grooves, and sheer will and emotion that resulted were percolated and edited into an astonishingly organic work. This Miles Davis wasn't merely presenting a simple hybrid like jazz-rock, but a new way of thinking about improvisation and the studio ...
- John F. Szwed, amazon.com

... Davis continues to redefine the boundaries of music.
- nf_tagore@yahoo.ca, Maryland, 08/99

Terrific - mindblowing! Not for the light hearted or easy listener. This music demands your full attention - and it must be listened to several times before you can fully grasp and appreciate it.
- James House, Salt Lake City, 07/99

1975 Agharta

Dig this stew. I can't believe that this album was recorded in the winter because it burns like summer.
- a music fan, Seattle,Wa, 09/99

BADDEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME! I have been listening to this incredible album almost non-stop since I discovered it in 1985. Culmination of the 70's Miles electric efforts, better than Pangaea in my opinion, no matter what the reviewers say.
- Drkmagus@aol.com, 08/99

Pure Natural Funk not from Concentrate. After reading the reviews posted so far, no one has pointed out one thing: it has arguably the nastiest grooves I have ever heard. Unbelieveable! It is a doctoral degree in funk.
- a music fan, Boston MA, 05/99

1975 Pangaea

Centuries ahead of its time. Pangaea is just two huge, continuous jams that encompass all miles was yearning for in the seventies. Moving from racious funk vamps to spacey , meditative passages, and to just about everything else, this electric masterpiece still sounds as if it were made tomorrow.
