Martin L. Gore Discography - Album / CD Reviews

**** 1989: Counterfeit E.Paudio

If Depeche Mode songs like The Things you said, Somebody, A Question of Lust, and One Caress are some of your favorites, then this album is what you're looking for. A selection of six cover songs by different composers and lyricists that Martin Gore reproduced with nothing but synthesizer layering and his unique voice. In a Manner of Speaking, Compulsion, and Smile in the Crowd are beautiful soft tunes that will make you sing along and hum like never before. In a Manner of Speaking appears also -- along with songs by Depeche Mode, Erasure, Morrissey, Ofra Haza, and Throwing Muses -- on the compilation Just Say Mao.
-- Saïd Sukkarieh, 7/99

"Counterfeit² is the second in Martin L. Gore's counterfeit cover version series and, like his first Counterfeit release in 1989, it is a wildly diverse and passionate collection. The new album sees Gore radically rework eleven tracks, originally made famous by the likes of Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Kurt Weill, John Lennon, Brian Eno and David Essex.".

Freestate

I can taste the tears falling
The bitterness that's inside you calling
Yearning for a liberation
Emotional emancipation

Let yourself go Let yourself go
Let your senses overflow

Step out of your cage and onto the stage
It's time to start playing your part
Freedom awaits
Open the gates
Open your mind
Freedom's a state
